Meet you guide at your hotel in New Orleans between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and drive 35 minutes into the countryside to reach Oak Alley Plantation. Step on board a 6 or 9 passenger airboat with graduated stadium-style seating to begin the first part of your tour.

Travel through shallow waters at up to 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour), while you learn about the surrounding wildlife from a guide with extensive knowledge about the local ecosystem. Zoom through marsh, swamp, and lake waters en route to alligator habitats where you can see these ancient reptiles up close and learn about their lives. Look up periodically to catch sight of the bird species that also call the area home, including bald eagles, pelicans, ospreys, and owls.

At the end of the boat tour, return to shore to tour the 19th-century Oak Alley Plantation, a typical antebellum plantation house. Walk down a classic alley of live oaks hung with Spanish moss on your way to the house, and then meet your docent for a guided tour inside. Afterward, spend a free hour wandering the 25-acre property or eating at the restaurant and café on site (own expense). The tour will conclude when your driver takes you back to your hotel in New Orleans.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Barataria Preserve
Your swamp tour is only 35 minutes from New Orleans, yet a world apart. This New Orleans air-boat tour is a high speed adventure that is part tour, part thrill ride. You will travel at high speeds in the 6 or 9 passenger boat, then slow down and stop for photo opportunities. Along the way, you will get a personal tour by your local Captain. Our air-boats have stadium seating, so that the person in front of you does not obstruct your view, and every seat is great for experiencing the tour and viewing the wildlife. Yes, gators will get close, very close. So close, that you will be able to look into those reptilian eyes. Alligators do hibernate in the colder months, but our experienced captains know where to look for them. On average, during the winter, you'll have better than a 50/50 chance of seeing a "gator". In the warmer months, you will see a gator. Every New Orleans air-boat tour is unique and we never know what will be around the next corner. The area toured is a combination of swamp, marsh and lake. So, you may see anything from a Bald Eagle to a pelican to Osprey to an owl. It really is that diverse. The air-boats are driven by a 454 Chevy Engine that will produce speeds of up to 35 miles an hour. They are propelled by a huge fan that will blow air from the back of the boat in excess of 200 miles an hour. These tours are truly a blast! They ride in inches of water and go where traditional boats cannot go. These boats were designed to take you to inaccessible areas of the swamp, places that you cannot reach by foot or car. It is truly a unique experience.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At:
Oak Alley Plantation
In combination with the airboat tour, you'll also visit the Oak Alley Plantation, which was built in 1837, with a 1/4 mile path, from River Road to the plantation house, lined with twenty-eight evenly spaced Oaks. There are additional attractions on the grounds which includes a restaurant, cafe and gift shop. The choice is yours how you would like to use your free hour.

A lot of fun and we didn’t have to do the driving

We had so much fun on the airboat ride! I would highly recommend the small boat, there were only 6 of us in the boat. We got to see a lot of alligators and our guide was very informative about them and their habitat. The plantation was good as well and we plenty of time to walk around and did not feel at all rushed. We were happy we didn’t have to do any of the driving!

We learned so much about the difficulties of the era, the proud workers and the quest for freedom. The hardships and luxuries, families and change of a nation and it’s people.

Nice tours away from the city

Both parts of this tour were great. Oak Alley was beautiful, have a mint julep while waiting for your tour, walk around the beautiful grounds & make sure you save yourself time to have lunch at their restaurant--food was excellent. The small air boat ride -- so much fun. We saw lots of alligators and even got to feed them. And when they open up that airboat on the swamp -- just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Absolute must do! The plantation is educational and beautifully maintained--food at the restaurant is excellent. The swamp and marsh airboat tour was a blast and learned about gators and other ecological issues facing LA. Best part of my week here!

Great show by the alligators
Gautam_M
, Apr 2022
We paid for the small boat tour but was ushered into a big boat with less paying customers. The driver was not clear at all. Barbara thought only the first few rows existed. Drop off and pick up points were vastly different and because of the lack of communication by the driver Barbara, we almost missed the return bus. The vehicle itself was very noisy, in today's day and time it seemed they had fitted the bus with an airboat engine minus the noise cancelling headphones 🎧. The three 🌟 is for the alligators.

Thank you for your feedback. Our small airboat broke down that day, so we had to move our guests to the large airboat. We are sorry that it happened. However, we issued you a partial refund being that the large airboat did not cost as much as the small airboat. That was out of our control and we did our best to accommodate you without having to cancel or rescheduled. You did not have to agree to that, but you did when we notified you during check-in.

It was a fun day. The bus is a little disorganized, but overall a fun day. Everything is timed well, even though the two destinations are on opposite sides of the city.

Good Tours But Too Little Time
Lynn_R
, Mar 2022
The airboat swamp tour was excellent and the plantation tour was good, depending upon if you like that sort of tour. Personally, I would not recommend both in one tour because the time between tours left little time for lunch. Our group started with the swamp tour in the morning and took plantation tour in the afternoon. We had less than 30 minutes for lunch before the Oak Alley tour so if you have kids or an older parent or friend, it’s going to be rushed. Both tours are worthwhile but not within the time allotted.
icon Response from Host , Mar 2022
Thank you for your feedback. We can understand that you feel like there wasn't enough timing for lunch. That's why we recommend our guests to pack a snack. We also offer food and snacks in our shop at the swamp dock and Oak Alley has a cafe where you can purchase lunch as well. We do our best to keep our guests happy and that is the only timing that we can make it work for a combo tour. However, like you said, you can always book the tours separately on different days if that's what you prefer. Once again, thank you for your feedback.

Oak Alley Plantation was absolutely beautiful, on-site restaurant was great, fast and efficient. Enjoyed hearing the history of the home and about some of the people who have lived there. Swamp boat tour was good overall, though did have some safety concerns during the tour. Lastly, our driver Barbara was outstanding. She was very personable and provided a tour guide feel during out and back ride, as a local to the area she is a tremendous asset and promoter of all things Southeast Louisiana.

The plantation tour was fantastic! The grounds were well maintained and the history was very engaging. The airboat was fun. The tour guide talked too much by displaying his personal views and opinions about EVERYTHING. Overall, my family and looked past it and enjoyed the ride.

Wonderful. Definitely book the small airboat they can get into smaller spaces. This is an experience not to be missed. If rainy weather is a potential, take a rain jacket. We got rained on and with the jacket, we were totally fine.
